Sequential Batch Means Techniques for Mean Value Analysis in Distributed Simulation

چکیده
In this paper we stress the necessity of design of eecient procedures for constructing conndence intervals of mean values in a simulation environment of multiple replications in parallel. Considering the popular approach based on analysis of batch means, we implemented and investigated sequential variant techniques that can give us an attractive speedup in simulation experiments of dynamic complex systems, such as communication networks, and at the same time to guarantee the accuracy of the nal results. Empirical results showing statistical properties of the mean value estimators in such distributed environment are presented.

A Procedure for Building Confidence Interval on the Mean of Simulation Output Data
One of the existing methods to build a confidence interval (c.i.) for the mean response in a single steady state simulation system is the batch means method. This method, compared to the other existing methods (autoregressive representation, regenerative cycles, spectrum analysis, standardized time series), is quite easy to understand and to implement and performs relatively well. However, the ...
متن کاملConfidence Interval Estimation of the Mean of Stationary Stochastic Processes: a Comparison of Batch Means and Weighted Batch Means Approach (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Suppose that we have one run of n observations of a stochastic process by means of computer simulation and would like to construct a condifence interval for the steady-state mean of the process. Seeking for independent observations, so that the classical statistical methods could be applied, we can divide the n observations into k batches of length m (n= k.m) or alternatively, transform the cor...
متن کاملA Procedure for Generating Batch-Means Confidence Intervals for Simulation: Checking Independence and Normality
Batch means are sample means of subsets of consecutive subsamples from a simulation output sequence. Independent and normally distributed batch means are not only the requirement for constructing a confidence interval for the mean of the steady-state distribution of a stochastic process, but are also the prerequisite for other simulation procedures such as ranking and selection (R&S). We propos...
متن کاملAWavelet-Based Spectral Method for Steady-State Simulation Analysis∗
We develop an automated wavelet-based spectral method for constructing an approximate confidence interval on the steady-state mean of a simulation output process. This procedure, called WASSP, determines a batch size and a warmup period beyond which the computed batch means form an approximately stationary Gaussian process. Based on the log-smoothed-periodogram of the batch means, WASSP uses wa...
متن کاملStochastics and Statistics A wavelet - based spectral procedure for steady - state simulation analysis q
We develop WASSP, a wavelet-based spectral method for steady-state simulation analysis. First WASSP determines a batch size and a warm-up period beyond which the computed batch means form an approximately stationary Gaussian process. Next WASSP computes the discrete wavelet transform of the bias-corrected log-smoothed-periodogram of the batch means, using a soft-thresholding scheme to denoise t...
